Since I am a big fan of Silk soymilk products I decided to taste test their smoothies. The Silk Live! Smoothie is a relatively new product and I was curious to see if it has good flavor, texture, and nutrition. A lot of pre-made smoothies are marketed as a healthy drink but in reality they are packed with sugar and loaded with calories. I hoped that the Silk smoothies would offer a tastier and healthier alternative.

I purchased the Mango flavor Silk smoothie. Silk also offers blueberry, peach, raspberry and strawberry smoothie flavors. The bottles are curvaceous and pretty; very feminine and attractive in appearance. I shook the bottle well and took a sip. It was smooth, creamy, refreshing and delicious. The taste of mangoes was fresh and sweet; really out of this world. Now I had to see if this smoothie was as healthy as they claimed or if it was too full of sugar for a regular snack or meal replacement.

One bottle is 10 ounces and there is one serving per container. This is a relief because quite frankly I am sick of manufacturers that label two or three servings per bottle just to make it appear that you're drinking less calories and sugar. Each serving (one bottle) contains 230 calories, 4 grams of fat, .5 grams of saturated fat, 2 grams of polyunsaturated fat, 1 gram of monounsaturated fat, 0 grams of trans fat, o mg of Cholesterol, 120 mg of Sodium (5% of the RDA), 350 mg of Potassium (10% of the RDA), 41 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of dietary fiber, 35 grams of sugars, and 7 grams of protein.

Obviously if you are on a low carb diet or are diabetic than this smoothie is not for you. However a lot of the sugars/carbohydrates come from the natural sweetness of the mangoes which are one of the main ingredients, and the other sugar source is from organic evaporated cane juice. It sounds as if 230 calories is quite a bit, but considering that a healthy size meal is around 300-400 calories, depending on size and gender, it's actually on the low side. This smoothie would be perfect for breakfast on the go or a pick me up snack during the day. If you look at the other benefits you'll see why.

Silk also gives you a lot of nutrition. One smoothie contains 35% of your daily Calcium, 25% of your daily Vitamins A, D, B6 and 12, C, E, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, Biotin, Phosphorus, and Manganese. It also gives you 15% of your daily Iodine and 10% of your daily Zinc and Magnesium. It sounds like the perfect drink to fight off winter colds and flus and could add lots of nutrients and vitamins to people who don't have much time to eat healthily during the day. I recommend it as a healthy snack for people who don't have sugar issues.
